    They're not wiping the fish population out people, the lake is drying out and those fish are trapped in the little pond cut off from the main body of water. They would die anyways after the rest of the water evaporates in a few days. Nothing stupid about it, makes all the sense in the world to catch them while they're still alive and fresh.
