Upon reaching the historic Santa Fe station at the rim of the Canyon, our double header joins the earlier, Alco powered train. The steamers then uncouple to move to the siding at Maswick for servicing while patrons enjoy the Canyon

  • My 3 and a 1/2 year old daughter is watching this with me.We may HAVE TO GO this summer, just to ride the train. The Grand Canyon will end up a little side trip or something.

  • Taranau, There is one steam trip daily from Memorial Day till Labor day, although catching another double header is unlikely. There are none planned so far for this season. But the trip is a delight. You will have about three hours at the canyon rim. You can also elect to take a bus tour of the rim during that time.

  • I've been there in 2008 neat train ride.

  • one might expect a giant hand to come down to pick up the locos and turn them around...at least that's how it would be in a model set :)

  • My family and I took the steam train to the Grand Canyon a few years back. I've always been a big fan of steam.

It was also fun that bandits attacked the train on the way home. The train stopped for them because, as the guide on our car said, "we can't find actors willing to jump from horseback to a moving train."

  • @Jamersonde AMEM RIP GCRY STEAM

  • Maybe everyone should bring steam locomotives back... like ozzytrains said... they're great tourist attractions... + that they have quite some pulling power (so maybe they could be used for some freight trains too) and, last but not least... they run on coal (which means that if the world will run out of oil, like they say it will in the future, we could still run them)...

  • Yeah, they DO have steam locomotives in service

  • To the owners of the GCR: "BRING STEAM BACK!!!!!"""

  • me and a couple others have started a petition to get these beasts back on track. Xanterra has not weighed their facts carefully, and in doing so basically murdered a peice of history. We are started facebook groups and writing letters to Xanterra's CEO, in an attempt to get these great engines back on track. It will be tough, but it will be at least worth a try.

  • Are you sure they stoped running them? That sucks

  • Why did they stop running them? Steam engines are a great tourist attraction.
