yes the mig 29's in that picture are not Bulgarian, they are the Russian aerobatic team "Striji". Look them up, they put on a good show.

i think a decision will come sometime next year. As much as i would like to see Eurofighter or Super Hornet or Su-37, realistically we cannot afford those. The main competitors now are the Gripen and the F-16 block 52+. We will most likely choose the Gripen, like Hungary. It's a shame, cause a single engine lightweight fighter can only go so far.

buying F-16s would be a big mistake for Bulgaria. The F-16 is the worst jet fighter and cannot compete with the Mig 29. Even Gripen is a much better choice. I would like to see F-18 super hornets or Su-37s defending the skies of Bulgaria. Those two would do the job very well.

@tzarbg123 I have read a bit more about gripen and most say it is much better then I thought before. its good plane with ability to land on highways. its very flexable and probably most important cheap. bulgaria must not buy old f16s, its so bad.. the airframe will just be problems all the time.. gripen uses american engines anyway, do they not want bg to buy gripen?

The bulgarian Air Force's inventory numbers around 137 aircraft, including 55-56 combat jets, but only the MiG-29s, about a dozen Su-25s and a few MiG-21bis are flight worthy, and the L-39ZA is only used for training. The condition of some of the Su-25Ks is bad

bulgaria needs 50% new military sources and aerplanes// teh 5th generation aeroplanes carry long range misiiles scalp like mirage 2000 noone byes mig 29 any more
