At 1830 on March 21, 2008, the steamer CASON J. CALLAWAY departed her winter berth in Erie, Pennsylvania bound for Two Harbors, Minnesota to load taconite. Watch as the vessel salutes Great Lakes Fleet fleetmate PRESQUE ISLE and has the salute returned before heading into Lake Erie to battle ice.

  • At least on the Upper Mississippi, the boats that aren't used for harbor work go South for the winter out of the ice to keep working on the Lower and Ohio Rivers. Good video.

  • My grandpa works on the Philip R Clarke

  • It's really nice to see that the Callaway is still on the water after all these years. My father worked on board the Callaway as a 'fireman' back in the 50s, I think not long after she collided with another ship. Thanks for taking the video and for sharing it. Maybe someday I will get to see her in person, so to speak.

  • My parents named me after this ship

  • She is at the Soo ready for midnight!
