This is a summary video of the goju-ryu component of an IAOMAS seminar conducted jointly by Nenad Djurdjevic and Colin Wee in Perth in 2005. It covers basic goju-ryu techniques as practised in the the Academy of Traditional Fighting Arts (see www.traditionalfightingarts.com).

  • yea but kendo is karate so that example is very bad in mho

  • @crazy4wheeler955 I take it you meant to say "kendo is not karate". Well, that is true, but then again the gi was not traditionally worn in Okinawan karate anyway. Early karateka wore whatever they were in. Chojun Miyagi wore shorts. Do you wear shorts? If you want to be "true to goju" (and not judo - from which the karate gi was adopted) perhaps you should! For me, the karate gi is a practical training suit, so that is why I use it. White is, however, not practical for our purposes.

  • why is his gi blue? just wondering, my style of goju ryu only has white gi's

  • @JustCassandra2010

We opted for blue gis in the mid 90s for purely pragmatic reasons: white gis stain very easily and can end up looking grubby - particularly when we go on our regular training camps (the earth here is dark red and doesn't wash out). The colour blue is also not necessarily "untraditional" in gis - consider the kendo keiko gi as an example.

  • @JustCassandra2010 - Hi Cassandra - the color of your Gi means nothing. I teach Goju Ryu and I wear red, blue, black, white and am currently looking for a green top. The gi is not even a traditional uniform for karate. There originally was none. They trained in their clothing or their underwear. I also wear single weave jujutsu gi tops. You get to do that when you are on your own.

  • Blue gi are also used in BJJ, but I just wanna point out... Do the clothes really matter? This is Goju Basics, not Karate Fashion Parade ;p Thanks for the vid

  • i practice wado ryu but i think goju rocks, and i like the blue gi it has a nice touch.
