Born on December 1682, Anna Laurie was the daughter of Sir Robert Laurie, 1st Baronet of Maxwellton. The stories go that Willaim Douglas of Fingland unsuccessfully wooed Anna and was rejected by her father who was a Hanovarian supporter, whereas William supported the Jacobite cause. Whether or not there was a romance between them is doubtful. It would never have succeeded anyway, as Annie was also a Hanoverian supporter, as she wrote in a letter concerning Willian Douglas "I trust that he has forsaken his treasonable opinions, and that he is content."
