Here are a few moments on my micro N Scale layout based on a town in southern Minnesota along the Chicago & North Western's "Alco Line". Appropriate diesel audio is used when possible taken from a CD distributed by the C&NW Historical Society.

The layout measures 28"x49", with a removable dual layer staging yard(s) that extends another 36". I used Atlas code 55 sectional track with all joints soldered and plenty of feeders. Due to the small size and tight radius this is best suited for smaller equipment. I run the long streamliner cars, but clearance is close. Here is a download link to the pdf of the July 2010 N Scale Magazine article with track diagram;

  • wow, this is a realy nice layout you've ade there man.

    i love the sounds, you drive the trains at correst speeds, not 1000miles.

    i like the trees and all the scenery

  • That passenger train pulling into the station brings back memories! I remember that sound from when I took commuter trains to Chicago and back.

  • I really like the way you set-up the sidewalk in front of the pool hall. I am attempting something similar on my own Galena and Platteville layout. Love the sounds as well - do you ever plan to get sound in the Alcos? I wonder if they make speakers small enough but with sound that's comparable to the HO sound decoders?

  • This is N scale model railroading at its very best. I'd really like to know how you weathered all the cars and buildings. An inspiration to those of us trailing a long way behind. Thank you.

  • how big is the overall layout

  • Can you send me the plan.

  • Can you please send me the plan? This is one of the nicest layouts I've ever seen!

  • could i have a copy of your track plan please? i might modify it a bit. GREAT layout amazing scenes!

  • Same, read it in N Scale the other day. Great layout big fan of the CNW in Wisconsin, love the Alco's.
