Debian is a 'distro' of an OS know as GNU/Linux commonly referred as Linux and yes it can be used on intel hardware and in many other platforms.

I use debian Lenny, it was installed by booting of dvd my old way of installing debian in text mode. That is helpful to those who cant install debian.
