CHICKEN-PICKIN' RAG is a jolly ragtime solo piano piece, written in 1976 in Hellewell's ''Mister D'' Music piano album Volume 2.
Although in ragtime style, this piece is brought up to date by including modern funky music and various other sections.
In the heyday of classic ragtime, in the late 19th century, the publicity said that ''brokers forgot their cares'' on hearing the music!
The renowned Welsh harpist Catrin Finch's arrangement and performance is terrific, and she has arranged two more of Hellewell's rags: Plastic Cakewalk and Kentucky Rag for harp (see Alaw Music Publishing). These pieces go down well with her audiences as encores.
CHICKEN-PICKIN' RAG is also published in China by the People's Music Publishing House in one of two piano albums of the Chinese edition of ''Mister D Music'' where it is well-liked and often performed (see other YouTube video).
There is also an arrangement, by the composer, for string quartet, also published in a String Quartet album of Hellewell's music by the People's Music Publishing House. Some 30,000 volumes of Hellewell's music has been published and sold in China

  • Thanks- much appreciated! I've picked out four more pieces for you, suitable for harp transcription: Blue Mink Blues; Passionata; Willow Weep; Susannah's Ragtime Jazz, see these on our website.

And after hearing your lovely performance of the Faure, on your site, I think you and your flautist might like another work of mine: ''Blues Romance'' for flute and piano (harp) - also on out website.
