my friend has this game and won't admit how disappointed he is in it. he was so excited to find it but after i wached him play it for a bit i was bored shitless, the graphics were super realistic, bland, and repetitive. the fighting looked like a pain in the ass. after a few days he stopped playing it. saying he wasn't in the mood to grind. it's almost as bad as when he got the first crystal chronicles and had no one to play with. poor bastard the best ff was number 9.

Actually I thought this game was pretty good... wasnt the best ff but it wasnt the worst... Story was a bit confusing but gameplay was different but fun instead of old random battles. and I hope you die.

Yes, the story, I couldn't really follow it. But I liked the battle system... it was just a way to stop you from running around in circles X and runs smoother. The battles weren't much different when you think of it

And also, you said the hero is usually an project/orphan/etc. and everything which is a reason to hate the antagonist, and that Vaan wasn't. Vaan WAS an orphan, and his only living relative was killed by the empire, thats reason enough to hate someone. All other FFs had the ATB bar why the hell do you not like it now all of a sudden.
