There's a 90s PIF which I've seen on the Tube (and nowhere else) which is quite effective in some ways, but fails in its text. The typeface is all wrong and the layout's unintuitive. Hey, these things matter. Also the slogan doesn't work. So I've replaced it with stern, thin Helvetica, so beloved of Adam Curtis, and a slogan that's not really a slogan so much as an admonishment.

  • Can you upload the original?Just to see how terrible you make it out to be.

  • Search for "Fireworks safety commercial".

  • Using abbreviations like that pull the viewer out of the moment and remind him that he's watching a PIF. Same reason I used sentence case.

  • Another point about the original I just noticed was their abbreviated use of "Nov." Along with the stylish font and "Nov. 5th" (th is SUPERSCRIPT, no less!) the original text looks APPEALING, exactly what you don't want in a PIF like this. Compare "NOV. 5th" with

    "N O V E M B E R 5 T H."

    Much more stark indeed.

  • Great improvement. I could easily see this possibly serving as an advert from a 'ban fireworks' group.

  • I watched the original, and it's funny how ineffective it is once you've seen Applemask's version. The font in the original tends to minimize the darkness of the background, while this smaller font maximizes it. Also, the original tagline was pretty stupid (I won't repeat it here).

  • Perhaps not the best, but the cries make it memorable. Horribly so.

  • I like your version better. I think the smaller font is more haunting.

  • Nice remix. Now can someone hand me a towel to stop the pee leaking out of my bladder?

  • Getting in the spirit, are we Applemask? :)

As a child of the 80's, nothing haunts me quite like the one with the kid, picking the damp sparkler off the ground.
