The same way Polaris made the song, The National's cover feels conclusive as if to say "this is it", or "goodbye". The song comes off to me as saying goodbye to someone or something you've been around for years and can't move on in life without. And it's not just a simple "goodbye for so/so long", but rather, "goodbye forever". It's this same feeling that keeps me hanging on this song.

Eh, they missed something in the song that was present in Mark Mulcahy's voice. But its a nice cover. I'm just loyal to Mark.
