Enough to Be On Your Way

The sun shines on this funeral
The same as on a birth
The way it shines on everything
That happens here on Earth
It rolls across the western sky
And back into the sea
And spends the day's last rays
Upon this fucked-up family
So long old pal

The last time I saw Alice
She was leaving Santa Fe
With a bunch of round-eyed Buddhists
In a killer Chevrolet
Said they turned her out of Texas
Yeah she burned 'em down back home
Now she's wild with expectation
On the edge of the unknown

CHORUS:
Oh it's enough to be on your way
It's enough just to cover ground
It's enough to be moving on
Home, build it behind your eyes
Carry it in your heart
Safe among your own

They brought her back on a Friday night
Same day I was born
We sent her up the smoke stack
And back into the storm
She blew up over the San Juan mountains
And spent herself at last
The threat of heavy weather
That was what she knew the best

CHORUS

It woke me up on a Sunday
An hour before the sun
It had me watching the headlights
Out on highway 591
'Til I stepped into my trousers
'Til I pulled my big boots on
I walked out on the Mesa
And I stumbled on this song

CHORUS

  • My daughter committed suicide and I love this song as he remembers his brother who did the same. If the "F" word offends you, you don't know how to take the English language in context. My mother also committed suicide years earlier, so "f*****-up" fits, even though I loved them both so deeply, my life will never be the same, but like he says, "It's Enough . . ." You'd have to know the whole story to get it!

  • I listen to this song everyday.. i don't know what he was singing about but the spirit of how he sang the song is golden

  • We're studying Death in Religious Studies. I cannot listen to this song without shedding a tear. Absolutely beautiful.

  • @kjt1941 I get it, as would anyone with a broken family. My heart goes out to you.

  • @mkraeftig get a life.

  • James, this is one of your best brother!

  • @mkraeftig except for that part where its about his brother who pretty much died do to alcohol poisoning. im pretty sure that in this situation he's safe to say f****ed up family.

  • That's the song that make's me remember my mom. She was my best friend. She died lot's a years away. I miss her. Thank you JT.

  • It's all about his brother. Very, sad song. Every word selected perfectly, even the "f*****d" up family. Absolutely beautiful and brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. "Caroline I See You" causes the same reaction. Simple is beautiful.

  • I was born in 1971, which is when JT first really hit big in the USA, so I've been blessed with his music my whole life. Lots of younger people are turned on by JT, Neil Young, Carole King and other great singer/songwriters.

  • I love the frankness of this song. I give great credit to JT for surviving the 80s without too much synthesizer abuse (see Phil Collins), coke or yuppieism. In 1997, he came back with a vengeance again on this song like he was in his 1970s prime only more subtle and touching if that's possible. This song is textured wonderfully, and the lyrics are heartbreakingly beautiful (even the F-word is shocking when JT utters it). This song deserves classic status.
