Here's some video I shot of Amtrak's eastbound Carl Sandburg, train #382, as it starts out departing the Quincy, Illinois station on May 2nd, 2009. Leading the train is P42DC #63, which has recently been overhauled with the new "snow scoop" headlight and bolty nose. As always, the engineer lays on the horn as the train starts out of the station and through the first grade crossing. NOTE: If you're wondering what all that jerky zooming is about, I was using my Cybershot camera to take this video, and as you can imagine fast zoom is really all it knows how to do!

  • This is a very good catch of the Carl Sandburg. I haven't been to Quincy in a long time, which makes me wonder...

When you took this video, was the train at the Quincy station or was it elsewhere? I know the station is at Wisman & 30th, but this doesn't look very familiar.

Also, when the Carl Sandburg & Illinois Zephyr go to Quincy, where do they get parked until it is time to start using them again?

5 stars and a fave for the vid

  • The train was stopped at the Quincy station. I took this video from across the street on the east side of the station, so I could get a better view of the train departing. The IZ & CS are both parked in the BNSF West Quincy, MO yard, on the other side of the Mississippi River, before they head back to Chicago.

  • How did you get a Cybershot that could zoom during a video? I've gone through 2 different versions and neither one of them had the ability to zoom while recording.

  • My camrea is a Cybershot DSC-H7. My guess is you have a simpler camera that doesn't have the capability to zoom while recording. I think all of the more expensive models have this feature.

  • am i the only railfan that jizzed in his oants when he heard that nice horn action

  • Nice camera view

  • Great video at first I thought it was a picture untill the cars drove by.

  • Awesome Horn!!!!!!

  • I don't believe the quad cities have one because they don't have good enough track structure or a y to turn it around after all that would bout have to be a turn around point (at least on BN track) Fort Madison has one and if you think little bitty quincy you should see little bitty laplata, mo a town of less than a thousand has an amtrak depot

  • Ah, thanks.

  • I wonder which politician managed to get a run to little Quincy when others could not get a run to the 300,000 population Quad Cities area of Illinois and Iowa :)
