In 2006 Kurukulla Center's interpreter Thubten Damchoe returned from a visit to Nepal inspired by the wonderful stupa built there for the great yogi Geshe Lama Konchog. He discussed the idea of building an enlightenment stupa at Kurukulla with our teacher Geshe Tsulga, who agreed. They mentioned it to director Wendy Cook, and she consulted the center's spiritual director Lama Zopa Rinpoche, who was very supportive but said there would be obstacles and suggested remedies.

The project was officially launched during the visit of Kyabje Choden Rinpoche on April 22, 2007, with a wonderful community lunch followed by a ground blessing ceremony, attended by Geshe Tsulga, Geshe Gyalten, Geshe Ngawang, Geshe Tenley, Kurukulla's resident nuns Tsunma-la and Ani Yeshe, Kurukulla students and many members of the extensive Boston Tibetan community.
