A Hotel Room

A hotel room on a rainy day
when the clouds are cold and the wind is grey.
The Sound of Music on the TV set
or else the words that the Generals say.

A hotel room with a bath en-suite,
and a tough bed-cover and a stiff starched sheet,
where Gideon's Bible lies near the bed
and the central heating thaws your feet.

A hotel room where others have been,
a cell in the body of the big machine,
The Sound of Music on the TV set,
a scene that's known before it's seen,

a place where you stay but do not remain...
White noise of rain at the window-pane.
