In this episode of the Crafty Gemini Show I teach you some quilting basics and make a small project out of what you learn. I cover some quilting terminology, what is a pieced quilt, what are quilt blocks, how to make half-square triangle block units using a super easy method where you can make two blocks at once. I also show you how to take two half-square triangle block units and a piece of batting and turn it into a fabric coaster! These pieced fabric coasters are a great beginner project whether you are learning how to sew or learning how to quilt. Anyone can make these. Happy sewing!

Vanessa, could I make a hot pad in a similar manner? Would I need to use thicker batting to protect the table from the hot pan?

Absolutely! I would use at least 2-3 layers of the cotton batting or you can get some Insul-Brite batting too which is used for project like that. Have fun!

No problem! It's not hard at all once you get the basics down. Have fun and check out my Video Quilt Along where I have 18 videos in a playlist showing you how to make a whole quilt from start to finish and I show you step-by-step each block and the process. :o)

Vanessa, after watching your videos, I decided to plunge right in. I made a set of oven gloves, a pair of potholders. a set of placemats and a pair of mug rugs. All for my Mom for Mother's day. Thank you "sew" much!

Love these videos! I'm new to sewing and they've been SO helpful. Is there a particular reason that the quilting is done after everything is sewed together on this project -- vs. quilting first, like on the zipper pouch? Planning on making a set of these for a Mother's Day gift! :D

I 'accidentally' started quilting when I started putting different fabrics together to make bigger panels for other projects, like 3 strips to make the front of a tote bag. Then I started doing different combinations, until I realized I was practically quilting without sewing on top of everything afterward! (Which you don't HAVE to do, but it holds layers together better than not doing it..) So you definitely don't have to make blankets; quilting is fun for any project!
