Mari, originally developed at Weta Digital for Avatar, is a 3D texture painting application that uses Quadro GPU-acceleration to handle complex, high resolution textures in 3D. With a responsiveness and feature set that puts even the best dedicated 2D paint systems to shame, Mari with Quadro solutions is extremely scalable, coping easily with an obsessive level of detail -- literally tens of thousands of textures -- quickly and elegantly.

@Ningirsutyr Hi-end film and character animation needs large texture maps, for example, so if the director wants to zoom in on a character, you retain detail in the skin/face/whatever you're zooming in on. Low resolution texture maps won't stand up to scrutiny in close-ups, the become pixelated and distorted, and ruin the look =)
Hope that helps.

Why is so much detail necessary?

@Jinseeker15 He meant each layer of textures consists of 40 4K maps, which is insane.
