I've always felt that if you wanted to exercise, it was imported to have a gym membership. For many years I was part of the gym culture, but about a year ago I started to feel that I wasn't getting the full benefits of a gym membership. Driving to the gym became more of hassle, so I decided maybe it was time to research home gyms. Having a gym at home provided an easy and more convenient way to exercise. The only problem was what equipment would be the best option with little space. My research led to me to a piece of equipment called the total gym.

I think many of us have seen the total gym infomercial on TV, promoted by Chuck Norris and Christie Brinkley. The selling line was that you could get a full body workout with just one piece of equipment. What attracted me to the total gym was it took up little space. I didn't want my apartment to look like gym floor. Instead of purchasing multiple machines, why not get one that could perform several exercises.

The total gym offers a simple and affective way of exercising. You sit or lie on a glide board, using a pulley system and your bodyweight as resistance. No weights included just your own bodyweight. Of course if you are super strong you can purchase a weight bar and add more resistance.

The total gym xls, which according to there website is the top of the line system. For over a year it has been on sale on their site for usually 40-60% off. It includes various accessories making it an offer you can't refuse. I fell for this a year ago when I saw the xls on sale for 40% off. The ad said for a limited time offer. So I thought I should cash in on that before the price went back up. Well, the price never went up and instead the xls has been on sale for the past year. There was no limited time offer. If I waited I could have saved more money. I wonder why the xls has been on sale for so long. Is a newer total gym coming out in the future?

The total gym motto, you can get a full body workout. Now that's somewhat true, but after using a total gym a couple of times, you realize it's more for your upper body. For guys, it's not good for leg exercises, especially if you want to build muscle. You're limited to the amount of leg exercises you can perform.

Can the total gym build muscle? The total gym does not give you enough resistance, associated with power and strength training programs. If your goal is to be a bodybuilder, stick with using barbells and dumbbells. The total gym is beneficial for core muscles and toning.

  • I think the Total Gym is more for women than for men. More of a toning piece of equipment.
