TEXAN LOVE SONG
Elton John
Don't Shoot Me (I'm Only The Piano Player) (1973)

I heard from a friend you'd been messing around
With a cute little thing I'd been dating uptown
Well I don't know if I like that idea much
Well you'd better stay clear I might start acting rough

You out of town guys sure think you're real keen
Think all of us boys here are homespun and green
But that's wrong my friend so get this through your head
We're tough and we're Texan with necks good and red

So it's Ki yi yippie yi yi
You long hairs are sure gonna die
Our American home was clean till you came
And kids still respected the president's name

And the eagle still flew in the sky
Hearts filled with national pride
Then you came along with your drug-crazy songs
Goddamit you're all gonna die

How dare you sit there and drink all our beer
Oh it's made for us workers who sweat spit and swear
The minds of our daughters are poisoned by you
With your communistic politics and them negro blues

Well I'm gonna quit talking and take action now
Run all of you fairies clean out of this town
Oh I'm dog tired of watching you mess up our lives
Spending the summertime naturally high

  • This has nothing to do with Bush. It was a song that came out during Vietnam. Think about southerns and that era. Hell, think about the whole damn country and that era. Bernie Taupin was just writing about something that makes people think, like hes good at

    .

  • uclrichard - The song is tongue-in-cheek; the only irony lies in the song itself. Neither Bernie nor Elton sympathized with these "red-necked Texans". The song's "nationalism" is the subject of ridicule. Nixon was not a favorite amongst these liberal Brits. :-) I've loved this song since I was a teen but in the early '90s there was no one to share the humor of it with.

617AV - Nice borrowed old joke. Are you too ignorant to make up your own?

  • I LOVE this song.. have for a lot of years. I lived in Texas in the late '70's, a transplant from many other places, not a 'true' Texan, and I use to call the local radio station and request this song. They played it for me a few times, but not for long. Wonder why?

Forget the politics.. just listen to the music.

  • Brilliant song, Elton and Berni were on a roll, 4 great albums in a row, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman across the Water Honky Chateau and Don't shoot me I am only the piano player.....

  • @Mr55go It's not all of the Tea Party (and this is the greatest fraud of all in that regard "Patriots") that worry me, but it is your so-called leaders and spokespeople. Now, this song is from the early 70's, a different era but it has some relevance today. Funny how far right and far left are exactly the same in some ways; they're all for the tyranny of the mjority when they're in the majority and vociferously against it when they're not. Ah, the delicious irony of it all.

  • To Primeholyassasin20: I'm a Tea Party guy who recognizes the satirical nature of this song. It is no love song to or for the violent and bigoted. Just the opposite. I actually was around when the album came out, and even as a teenager understood this. You have a cartoonish, straw man, MSNBC view of the Tea Party. Think for yourself, son.

  • I originally thought this was a parody. So now I have to think all songs have to have a politically correct meanings, lol.

  • @sallysbaby

I consider myself a well informed fan, and am a high school music teacher for 20 years. Taupin himself describes his writing of those days to be "impressionistic". So, he has succeeded. The two of you interpret the lyrics completely differently. That was his intent. Not, an accident.

  • @randi74 LOL. Do you even know how Taupin describes his style of writing in those days? I do. And guess what....You're wrong.
