In preparation of the exchange a series of workshops were held to transfer relevant
knowledge and skills on leadership, Anishnawbek identity, community life, and artistry. We had to include an artistic component to the project so we decided to host a collaborative art project and to submit it to UNESCOS Art Miles Mural Project.
The Art Miles Mural Project is an official project of the UNESCO Decade of the Culture of Peace and Non Violence Among Children of the World. Mural art is created by children, youth and adults (often in distressed regions) who paint to raise awareness, share views, and stimulate learning about social justice, deteriorating environmental issues, and concern about prevention of violence, bullying, causes of poverty, lack of education, sports, music, gender issues, peace, healing and unity.
Funding support for the project was sought through various sources we were supported by Canada Council for the Arts, the Dreamcatcher Fund, Sagamok Chief & Council and Saulteaux Enterprises—Sagamoks economic development arm.
