Have you actually SEEN Challenger 3985? I have filmed it, chased it, and recorded it. It is something to behold!
Keep in mind, it was designed for hauling loads that I suspect are seldom seen in the UK. Trains are longer, heavier, and travel over much greater distances than anything in Europe, so it is an exercise in comparing apples and oranges.
If I am not mistaken, the speed record for steam was set in the UK in the neighborhood of 129mph... broken since?
@984francis - You're aware, aren't you, that Challenger #3958 is a steam locomotive, and a whupp-ass BIG one at that? You should have pointed out the same as you did for 157RANDOM five months later.
If Your on about it breaking a record on a preserved run your still wrong, well you are now anyway! 'Dominion of New Zealand' ('Bittern') Broke the record at 70 MPH
FFS, 157RANDOM and pals, the context is obvious, its the record for this particular bit of track. Oh wow thanks for pointing us to Mallards record. Its a wonder that you still know how to breathe. Just enjoy the video.
