as a volvo owner, i do no advocate the use of these KN filter. i, too, had one installed, but caused a failure of my ECU due to overheating. if you are an s40 owner, and have installed an kn filter, or any other open cone filter, replace it will your stock unit immediately. you may not know, but the ECU is cooled by the rushing air in the stock air box. the removal of this unit will cause overheating and premature failure of your ECU. failure to comply will cost you $1600 for an ecu + labor

If you're doing it the wrong way maybe.
A lot of us at Swedespeed are running these filters without problems.

Well my ECU did get very hot this summer but i mounted a powerblanket and the ECU is now cold as ice... Well not ice but it's cold ;)

You say its homemade, how did you make it? I have a 2005 T5 and having a hardtime finding a good intake without spending alot!

Pipe + hoses and a filter.
Pretty easy and non costly if you consider the other choices for premade intakes.
