Fieldfare (Turdus pilaris) observed feeding on old apples in my garden. Normally seen out in the fields in flocks, a cold and prolonged winter can drive them into gardens looking for food. Like their counterpart the Thrush, they normally feed on earthworms, snails, insects and other small invertebrates. They can often be seen fiercely defending their food supply and will fight off much larger birds. When seen in gardens they tend to stay solitary and territorial. A local resident who is also a keen nature lover told me last October that according to his observations of animal and plantlife, we're going to get a cold and prolonged winter. So far he has been right...

  • How lucky we are not to (feel a) need to look around after every mouthful.

  • @SumDoood

Absolutely, although in a SHTF situation that might change.

  • Yes, I was filming from inside but because it was so shy and flew away at the slightest noise or movement, I didn't get time to set up my tripod so hand-held filming had to suffice.

It has returned today and is a lot more bolder. It is also highly aggressive and has taken on several blackbirds in defending its apples but I haven't been able to film that part of its behaviour yet.
