It's a billion dollar business that 40 million people rely on, but Bangladehsh's jute trade is grinding to a halt. Its biggest customer Iran can't buy jute anymore.. and the product is stacking up in warehouses.. with nowhere to go. Al Jazeera's Nicolas Haque reports from Nasringdi, Bangladesh.

I read in PJ O'Rourke's All the Trouble in the World (p.40-42, and visible in a Google Books search) that Jute isn't a high-quality fiber, he didn't think too highly of jute rugs and business cards, and that its only advantage being it's low price.

Unfortunately, the country is utterly dependent on the crop and hasn't diversified.
