LA PROCESSIONE DEI "PANNUSI" - (Sorrentini fraz. di Patti)

Il venerdì antecedente la seconda domenica di agosto,
a Sorrentini, piccola frazione del comune di Patti,
la processione dei "pannusi"
(torce realizzate con gli steli secchi dell'ampelodesmo)
apre ufficialmente la festa di San Teodoro.
La singolare processione,
nonostante il tempo ed alcune contaminazioni
(l'introduzione della processione delle reliquie del Santo),
conserva ancora oggi quell'atmosfera magica e primordiale.
Questo antichissimo rito di chiara origine pagana,
sembra che voglia richiamare alla memoria,
antichissimi riti agresti propiziatori,
oppure, come attesta lo studioso
di tradizioni popolari siciliane Giuseppe Pitre,
di antichi riti legati al culto solare.
La processione, dopo aver attraversato la via principale,
creando con il loro bagliore e l'intenso fumo
una atmosfera da sabba,
si conclude davanti alla Matrice.
I partecipanti dopo aver ammucchiato i residui delle fiaccole,
iniziano, al suono della musica di San Teodoro,
una forsennata danza attorno al fuoco.
La danza attorno al fuoco
viene solitamente intesa dai fedeli del luogo
come una commemorazione della morte del Santo,
avvenuta nel rogo, con il martire insensibile al supplizio
ed intento a cantare lodi a Dio.
E' chiaro si tratti, ancora una volta,
di una visione che riflette il tentativo di dare,
nel tempo, una spiegazione religiosa ad una parte della festa
intrisa di chiari residui paganeggianti.

The antecedent Friday the second Sunday of August, to Sorrentini, small fraction of the commune of Patti, the procession of the "pannusi" (torches realized with the dry stems of the ampelodesmo) it officially opens the party of St. Theodore.
This ancient rite of clear pagan origin, seems that wants to recall to the memory, ancient propitiatory rural rites, or, as the researcher of traditions popular Sicilian Joseph Pitre attests, of ancient tied up rites to the solar cult.
The procession, after having crossed the principal street, creating with their shine and the intense smoke a sabba atmosphere, it concludes him in front of the Matrix.
The participants after having piled up the residues of the torches, begin, to the sound of the music of St. Theodore, a madwoman dance around the fire.
The dance around the fire is usually intended by the believers of the place as a commemoration of the death of the Saint, happened in the fire, with the insensitive martyr to the torture and intent to sing praises to God.
And' clear he treats, once more, of a vision that reflects the attempt to give, in the time, a religious explanation to a part of the party soaked with clear heathenish residues.
