He doesn't do it all the time, but he does it a lot. It's kind of like a signature. Ahmad Jamal is one of the only jazz guys who can end a tune with such an obviously perfect cadence and get away with it. It would sound goofy if anyone else did it.
UNFUCKINGBELIEABLE! Did you see the look on Ben Webster's face at 3;13? I think he was looking down at the (white) drummer & he couldn't quite believe what he was hearing! totellyouthetruth I always thought Jamal's drummer was black & it surprised me that he was white. Man, Jamal looked so young & played like a fucking GENIUS! That was the incredibly swinging fantastic drummer Jo Jones at the end with the big smile on his face. I think the white guy with the beard & pipe was Nat Hentoff.
THANX AudioTape for posting this gem!! This trio will always be my favorite [check out Live At the Alhambra- CLASSIC!]
I couldn't believe the who's who that were standing around diggin' it! Genes are amazing especially in the NOLA area. A true world fusion of peoples. The 'white' drummer, as you say, was Vernel Fournier from Nawlins' who, in 1975 converted to Islam and took the name Amir Rushdan.
