I have said on many other posts on U-tube that Jussi Bjorling was, without doubt, the greatest operatic tenor of the 20th century, perhaps ever. This little gem adds further proof to my assertion. OK - this will always be regarded as Mario Lanza's special piece but, quite frankly, his version pales into insignificance alongside Bjorling's beautiful rendition.

@sugarbist I agree with you. Just heard Corelli do this in English and wonder why he did not sing it in French or Italian but at least he sang it. I know the lady who wrote it was French. I must see if Thill sang it in French. So many have sung this and yes Caruso's Because is in French.

@suffes1 although we disagreed on some points,I did enjoy the interactive dialogue we exchanged.Bjorling was a gifted tenor with a beautiful voice and hopefully there will be tenor voices that we can get excited about in the future.Buon Divertimento.

@sugarbist Cont..........Than conc. the oprea audience. Today -YES! agree, but up to 90" and early 2000 it was very different. The knowledgeable experienced opera lowers was still with us! A poll today would be a joke! I saw a list of "the hundred greatest singers of the century" Caruso, JB and Lanza was the only tenors on the list and at the very bottom. Brittney Spears was No. 3.............................

@sugarbist Yes, agree here. Thats my standpoint to. For Björling it´s Romeo and Juliette, Rigoletto and Boheme. Than it´s some single areas from different operas ex. Nessun Dorma and Ingemisco wich both, i think is his real showpieces. Cont..............

@suffes1 Unfortunately for me, I really don't come accross too many people that are knowledgeable experienced opera lovers.Please don't take this as an insult. But, I get the feeling that most audiences will applaud to any bad performance. Enjoy

@suffes1 I do definitely think that tenors are defined by the roles they sing.I surely prefer Del Monaco in Pagliacci,Otello,Aida&Forza.Bu
t I prefer Gigli Di Stefano&Bjorling in Boheme Lucia& Butterfly.Volpi sang everything from Favorita to Puritani&sang everything in pitch.The quotation that you refer to about JB is well noted and worthy of an extremely fine great gifted tenor. -
@suffes1 There were some great tenors during the "Golden Age"But if you are specically referring to1940to1950when Bjorling sang many times at the Met,Giuseppe Di Stefano was in his prime & also singing Extremely well,It also could be said that Volpi was perhaps the best Tenor in the world from Approx.1928to 1938.Some tenors also retreated to Italy during the war.I may agree with you as far as leading but I do not believe dominating.I'm not trying to diminish the greatness of an elegant tenor and

@suffes1 I never did doubt that Bjorling had a beautiful voice&vocal line,he was Incapable of uttering an ugly tone.However, there were more times that I felt he did leave me a little cold. I also felt he was a little methodical, but that could be attributed to the way he sang to the music so well.When he did sing with passion,he was truly great. But it was too infrequent for me.I also think Jb's voice Size was more than lyrically adequate but was not competitve with the more spinto voices.
Björling was arguably the greatest voice of the 20th century and this is just one small example. In 1999, Classic CD magazine recruited 25 music critics to rank the 100 greatest singers of the 20th century. Jussi beat out all singers in all voice categories. Lanza didn't even make the list. Among tenors, Domingo came closest at #6, Caruso #7, Ggli #9, Pavarotti #19, and Wunderlich #21. His technique and vocal beauty are unsurpassed.

@jgraif: I heard Lanza's version. Sorry, but nothing surpasses this version. Lanza's voice wasn't as full and his highs weren't as sparkling as Bjorling's.
