@JohnDeere30201 I would think that if you use an engine that has a charging stator that generates 12 volts then you could wire a switch to turn on alternator/welder..

@junkman6261 I should say that the cables need to be switched one for the other not replaced which will give you welds that are better looking and stronger welds.

can you use just an engine and a altenator?

@JohnDeere30201 I don't think so. You have to be able to apply voltage to the alternator to get it to start generating.

You need to change your ground cable and your welding cable because your undercutting your welds instead of depositing welding material into the weld not trying to criticize or anything just trying to give you a better weld that's all but I like this setup.

@wrksnfx Thanks, I will do that. My cables are old and need replacing anyway, I just used them because they were free. Thanks for the info.
