Be My Friend - http://www.myspace.com/psychtruth

Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. psychologist discusses the difference between psychiatry and psychology.

Psychiatry focuses on medical or physical interventions such as drugs, electroshock therapy, deep brain stimulation by electrode, psychosurgery, etc. This is the model of biological psychiatry. Behavior problems are considered to be actual medical illnesses with physical causes despite the fact that after over 100 years of attempts to identify a physical cause for mental illness, there are still none.

Often time people are given antidepressants like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Luvox, Celexa, Lexapro, Effexor or Wellbutrin.

SSRI (Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are often promoted as correcting chemical imbalances in the brain but there is no proof that depression or mental illness is caused by chemical imbalances in the brain nor is there any proof that antidepressants correct an imbalance. These medications often time have horrible side effects like agitation and sexual dysfunction.

Psychology by contrast acknowledges the potential of behavior problems being learned responses which can be corrected with therapy and communication, education and understanding.

There are no cures in psychiatry. Psychiatric medications only suppress or inhibit symptoms of behavior problems. This creates long term mental health consumers who take expensive drugs but never fully recover from their difficulties.

  • When I was in kindergarten my teacher thought I had ADHD and was set on putting me on ritalin which my mom thought was ridiculous. They compromised and agreed to an IQ test to diagnose if I had ADHD and if I did my mom would have home schooled me. I ended up scientifically proving that the teacher was just really really boring and I had to let myself get distracted to keep from falling asleep

  • To those who wholeheartedly agree with this guy's viewpoint, remember that he himself is a psychologist. His description of psychiatry was both biased and incorrect. Psychiatry places as much emphasis on accessing the core of a patient's pathology using psychological means.

If you think prescribing anti-depressants is "99%" of the time common practice for psychiatrists, you have that wrong too.

This professor is as ignorant as anyone to make these claims.

Both professions have their own merit.

  • Drinking challenge: take a drink everytime he says "you know"

  • stupid hippies

  • @RazorsharpLT There is more to it than that. I think you are basing your information off the majority of students that major in psychology in there undergraduate years and do nothing with it after that. I will be getting my BA in psychology this spring and I am already in the process of getting my license to counsel people with chemical/alcohol dependencies while I continue in grad school in clinical psychology. Its not useless, do some research.

  • For those saying psychiatry is all bad and psychology is better, then why is the psychology world slowly dying and the psychiatric world growing? Psychiatric Times is obviously about psychiatry and have you read the latest Psychology Today magazines? They have been promoting the SSRIs and other drugs. I wish people didn't go straight to drugs and went to treatment first, but drugs have worked and easier than therapy. The patients have spoken and are no longer patient. They want the medication b

  • Psychologists are those who distance themselves through theory, teaching, writing, lecturing etc about human behaviours, thoughts and emotions, whereas Psychiatrists are a Medical extension of the classic Therapist/Counsellor and immese themselves more into the client's world and frame of reference or "Get their Hands Dirty" so to speak.

  • @MsAdam63 They were probably just testing your IQ to see if it was effecting your learning at all. IQ would have proved nothing, its just a behavior and social problem... people with ADHD can be brilliant, or really stupid, makes no difference.

  • Spell check......I meant "norepinehrine"....which is classified as a Neurotransmitter as well as a natural occuring hormone in the body.

  • Psychologists are not licensed to prescribe medication. Only Psychiatrists are. I don`t think Psychiatry in the whole sense is a failure. People do have real symptoms they can`t "just snap out of ", like not enough of the chemical serotonin in the brain. The newer SSRI`s are a hit and miss, some work for a person, while the same medication doesn`t work for another. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, to me , don`t work as well as SSNRI`s ( SSRI`s with Norephenephrine) which is an antagonist

  • @1234Punkdrummer

    It's useless as philosophy.

Teaching psychology and philosophy is like teaching life.

Yes, it might be interesting, but as a profession it is completly null.

In conclusion - my father can be a psychologist, as he has had a lot of life experience, so what's the point in studying it?
