MONARCHY IN CANADA

From the days of earliest settlement the only form of society Canadians have known has been a monarchy. The native people themselves had a tribal idea of kingship. Our tradition of monarchy was French and British and became, as it now is, distinctly Canadian. In 1867 Canadians freely and deliberately reaffirmed their allegiance to the Monarchy. They have done so at each subsequent stage in their political development.

The Constitution of Canada declares that the Government of Canada and the Commander in Chief of the Forces are vested in the Queen. Her Majesty is one of three parts of the Parliament of Canada (Queen, Senate and Commons). She is Sovereign of the Order of Canada, Sovereign of the Order of Military Merit, Colonel-in-Chief of numerous units of the Canadian Forces, Honorary Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and Patron of many institutions and organizations in various walks of Canadian life.

The Queen succeeded to the Throne in 1952. She assumed the separate title "Queen of Canada" by Act of Her Canadian Parliament 1953. She was crowned 1953 and became the first Sovereign to open the Parliament of Canada in person 1965, and proclaimed the National Flag of Canada 1965. Presided at the Centenary of Canadian Confederation 1967. Opened the Montreal Olympics 1976. Celebrated Her Silver Jubilee in Ottawa 1977. Proclaimed the revised Constitution of Canada 1982. Created Canadian Heraldic Authority 1987. Presided over Canada Day Celebrations, Parliament Hill, 1990 & 1992.

Maple Leaf Forever - Canada's unofficial national anthem (1867 - 1981), but is still used by Canadian Army.
O Canada - Canada's national anthem (1981 - present)

GOD SAVE THE QUEEN OF CANADA!!!

  • Is the Queen coming for the Olympics?

  • Alas, no but Her Majesty us coming to Canad this summer (she will also attend Canada Day ceremonies in Ottawa), then she will go straight to New York to address the United Nations as the Queen of all Commonwealth Realms.

  • What business does a British monarch have in ruling Canada?

  • "ruling"?

Very poor choice of word. The Crown "reigns" while the government of the day "rules."

  • @InMooseWeTrust Because Canada is in the British Commonwealth. For any country that is a member the Queen or King of England is also their Queen or King.

  • @NovaScotiaNewfie Well, that's only partly true. Not all members are required to have the British monarch as their respective head of state. Canada is one of the "Commonwealth Realms." The British Commonwealth has 53 members and 16 of them are realms.

  • Thank God we have a Queen and not some riff raff from a corporate board room with less charisma than a pair of nylon underpants. it takes a person of royal stock to be fired upon, and not even flinch. God Save the Queen.

  • WOW is all I can say, some beautifull pictures of The Queen in Canada.

and interesting to see so many Canadians who argue for the Canadian Crown and opposed to republicanism.

I am British and dread the thought of a politician as head of state.

  • Volkswagen!

  • God save the Queen of Canada!

  • Damn it sucks being a pro British American. I wish the US stayed loyal to the crown like Canada did. God Save the Queen

  • I'm from the UK and even we don't get photographs of her Maj on the stamps. They're all embossed profiles.

  • Nothing lasts forever!

  • @NovaScotiaNewfie No actually only 15 of the 52 'realms' of the commonwealth of nations have her as their head of state (Monarch).

  • you could put complicated arguments forward on both sides, all i can say as an englishman,is when i think of canada, i am filled with respect and warmth, and if the canadians feel the same about the uk,then thats fine by me.lets stay united.

  • I wonder just when our government will accede to a referendum on the issue of monarchy, though I suspect it won't be until after the death of the current monarch, maybe out of respect for her.

  • Long live the Commonwealth !
