Spartacus2000 Thornhill 2010 highlights

Spartacus 2000 recently participated at the Thornhill Challenge Cup in the Under 11 age group, as part of their development to play 11 a side football beginning this fall.
The group stage of the tournament presented opponents with contrasting styles. Spartacus was allowed to attack with abandon in their game against Whitby, scoring eight times by the end of the game. Interestingly, eight different players found the back of the net indicating the team was able to provide a well balanced attack.

The second game provided a slightly different team to overcome, as Georgetown had players with pace, and was able to engage in a more physical, yet fair style of play. However, the Spartacus defence were more than up to the challenge, the offense acquitted themselves likewise, and together constructed a 3-0 victory.

The semi final game pitted Spartacus against Vaughan Azzurri the game being contested on a water logged pitch under a torrential downpour. Spartacus started well, passing the ball as best could be expected given the conditions, and dealt with the opposition's long ball tactics. However, they found themselves a goal down at half time, after a surge from Azzurri.

The second half witnessed a tactical change, and for much of the half Spartacus carried the play, and was rewarded for their efforts wit an equalising goal. From subsequent kick off Spartacus continued to push for a winning goal, but were unfortunate to go a goal behind late in the second half from Azzurri's only attempt on goal the entire half.
Spartacus performed well at the tournament, and showed strong team character throughout the tournament, but especially during their semi final game against an older and physically stronger team under less than ideal field conditions...
