Not many Amtrak GG1's got the full red nose paint scheme.
This one is seen by "K" tower at Washinton Terminal, Union Station, Washington , DC

  • Do you know why the GG!'s were scrapped?

  • @stobartrail92 Well besides the usual stuff about every machine eventually has to be replaced in time (given the GG-1s had an amazing 50 year career), as I recall the upgrade in voltage from 11,000 to 25,000 Volts on the Northeast Corridor was incompatible with the venerable machines, Their replacements could never match their performance, i.e. a GG-1 could handle any passenger train without double-heading.

  • Wish I had seen a working GG1. I saw the one on display at the Harrisburg station while traveling from Pittsburgh to NYC last year. Love the choice of Pat Metheny for the background music too!

  • Being a west coast native, I never saw these. That's pretty cool.

  • I only ever saw one of these once, briefly (prolly 'cos I don't live in the U.S.!), but they were one of the most distinctive electric designs ever.

  • Very nice. I miss the G's.

  • I have the lionel model of it. Very nice paint job!
