Learn how tight your violin fiddle bow should be. Too loose? Too tight? This video will help you get it just right!!

As you play your violin the hair of your bow needs to be at a certain tension in order to get the best sound without uncontrolled bouncing. A simple rule of thumb is to have a pencil width between the stick and the hair at the middle of the bow. Tighten or loosen with the nut at the bottom of your bow to get the correct tension.

NOTE: When you are done playing you need to loosen your bow hair. This is important because your if left tight your hair will stretch and c slip out of the frog. If left tight the hair can also cause your bow to warp, ouch!! So get into the habit of loosening your hair after each music session.

Did you know that the hair on a bow comes from a horse's tail? Yep.

  • Hey Klausious. Yes you would use the same method to tighten your new bow. With a new bow you might find that a few hairs may stay a little loose. Leave them alone and they will tighten in as you break in the new hair. Don't yank them out

  • What's ya at by! Like your videos. I saw one you did a while ago called Mussels in the corner on tin whistle. I am tryting to learn that one. Unfortunately there is a block of text over the bottom of your D, E and F fingers. Makes it kinda hard to follow.will you do another one to correct that?
