SANTA FE, N.M. — A former Shreveport soldier too ill to return to the state for his Louisiana Veterans Honor Medal was instead honored with its
presentation in his new home, Santa Fe.
New Mexico Department of Veterans Services Secretary Timothy Hale presented the Louisiana Veterans' Honor Medal today to World War II veteran Peter Cascio, 87, during a special Presentation Ceremony at the Beehive Assisted Living in Santa Fe, where Cascio lives.
Cascio was born in Shreveport but moved to New Mexico's state capital in 1989. He suffers from Parkinson's disease and was unable to travel home to receive the medal Louisiana awards to all honorably discharged veterans and family of deceased veterans who claimed residency in the state during their service.
Cascio had been notified that he was among that state's latest group of recipients of the medal, which was created by the Legislature in 2008. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and state Veterans' Affairs Secretary Lane Carson usually present the medals, often in ceremonies with numerous veterans and their families.
