Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714-1787)

La clemenza di Tito (1752)
Dramma per musica in 3 acts

Libretto: Pietro Metastasio

Sesto's aria (Act I)

Numi, assistenza! A poco a poco io perdo
l'arbitrio di me stesso. Altro non odo
che il mio funesto amor. Vitellia ha in fronte
un astro che governa il mio destino.
La superba lo sa, ne abusa; ed io
né pure oso lagnarmi. Oh sovrumano
poter della beltà! Voi, che dal cielo
tal dono aveste, ah! non prendete esempio
dalla tiranna mia. Regnate, è giusto;
ma non così severo,
ma non sia così duro il vostro impero.

Opprimete i contumaci;
son gli sdegni allor permessi:
ma infierir contro gli oppressi!
Questo è un barbaro piacer.

Non v'è trace in mezzo a' traci
sì crudel, che non risparmi
quel meschin che getta l'armi,
che si rende prigionier.

  • Thanks for posting this !!! ...i'm not yet acquainted with this Period-Instrument Ensemble... thanks again ! :->

  • Apparently they have released only one cd so far (I usually do a little research before posting something).

  • I see. It's also interesting that they specialize on Classical Opera... very specific. :>

  • Very neglected artform (not counting Mozart of course). That's why I have at the moment pretty much dedicated my channel for the same kind of music - galant, rococo and classicism (that doesn't mean that I will no longer post anything interesting outside that timeframe).

  • I love this aria! So much energy.

  • Indeed. We share a common thing - uploads of neglected forms, sub genres, obscure composers etc.
