This screencast shows how to extract an STL format mesh surface from DICOM CT data, using the open source DeVIDE software [1]. Although DeVIDE can visualise the surface, the saved STL file is opened with another very cool open source package called MeshLab [2] to double-check its correctness.

More information:
* The final pipeline used in DeVIDE was:
DICOMReader - doubleThreshold - seedConnect - closing - contour - wsMeshSmooth - vtkQuadricDecimation - stlWRT
* I could have gotten rid of the inner surfaces by using a polyDataConnect with a seed point to select only the outer surface.
* There's also a screencast showing more of the DICOM browsing and reading functionality in DeVIDE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iLfu6JXkWP4

  • @OpieChan: I'm guessing that you're working on a 32 bit installation of DeVIDE. That error message means that it simply is not able to allocate all the memory it needs to run your complete pipeline. First thing to do is to try the same pipeline with a 64 bit installation of DeVIDE.

  • @cpbotha Thank you!

  • Hello! I am attempting to convert a DICOM of a rat skull into STL, and I keep getting an error message ("bad allocation") when I hook up the quadric decimation. If I leave it out, everything works fine. Do you know what the error message means? Thanks.

  • Love your video... Am trying the same thing with tiff and png image but doesnt do any good
