January 3 - February 17, 2008
Edward Cella Art + Architecture, Santa Barbara, CA
New and recent works by Richard Aber, Ethan Turpin, Kofi Cole, Peter Cole, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Cecilia Paredes, Joan Tanner, Pauline Wiertz, and Miriam Wosk
Inspiring fascination, wonder, and desire, curiosities are objects whose categorical boundaries range from natural history, ethnography, archaeology, religious or historical relics, antiquities and works of art. The impulse to collect the extraordinary and mysterious is an attempt to understand boundaries of contemporary knowledge.
The tendency to collect and accumulate is implicit the mediums of collage and assemblage. Organized along these notions, Curiosities presents the work by eight artists who share these contrary impulses to collect and transform in order to rediscover and investigate contemporary issues of identity, culture, and the discrepancies and contradictions of contemporary life.
Featuring sculptures, wall works and installation, the exhibition transforms the gallery into a room-sized cabinet of curiosities.
