Umm... Man, it's totally correct to say "Ich bin ein Berliner". Berliner a kind of donut too but the citizen of Berlin are also called "Berliner".

In English many names for residents of german citys are funny:

Frankfur: Frankfurter
Hamburg: Hamburger
Berlin: Berliner
My favourite: Hamm-Hammer

But remember, the citys where there before those things were named after them!
