Today Sam talks with TV and Film Director and Producer, Murad Aldin Amayreh. Many of Murad's films focus on the subject of Islam and being Muslim, so we decided to have an in depth conversation to better understand what it is to be Muslim in America. A Muslim (Arabic: مسلم‎) is an adherent of the religion of Islam. The feminine form of 'Muslim' is Muslimah (Arabic: مسلمة‎). Literally, the word means "one who submits to God". The word "Muslim" is the participle of the same verb of which "Islam" is the infinitive. Muslims believe that there is only one God, translated in Arabic as Allah. Muslims believe that Islam existed long before Muhammad and that the religion had evolved with time from the time of Adam till the time of Muhammad, and was completed with the revelation of verse 3 of Surah Al-Maeda"

The Qur'an describes many Biblical prophets and messengers as Muslim: Adam, Noah (Arabic: Nuh), Moses (Arabic: Musa) and Jesus (Arabic: Isa) and his apostles. The Qur'an states that these men were Muslims because they submitted to God, preached his message and upheld his values. Thus, in Surah 3:52 of the Qur'an, Jesus' disciples tell Jesus: "do thou bear witness that we are Muslims". Muslims pray five times a day; these five prayers are known as Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha. There is also a special Friday prayer called Jumu'ah.

Most Muslims accept as a Muslim anyone who has publicly pronounced the Shahadah, which states, "There is none worthy of worship except God, and Muhammad is His Messenger." Currently, there are an estimated 1.4 billion Muslims, making it the second largest religion in the world.

Islam (Arabic: الإسلام; al-'islām (help·info)) is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a seventh century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (Arabic: الله, Allāh). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]". There are between 1 billion to 1.8 billion Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity.

Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, and regard the Qur'an and the Sunnah (words and deeds of Muhammad) as the fundamental sources of Islam. They do not regard Muhammad as the founder of a new religion, but as the restorer of the original monotheistic faith of Abraham, Moses, Jesus, and other prophets. Islamic tradition holds that Jews and Christians distorted the revelations God gave to these prophets by either altering the text, introducing a false interpretation, or both.

Islam includes many religious practices. Adherents are generally required to observe the Five Pillars of Islam, which are five duties that unite Muslims into a community. In addition to the Five Pillars, Islamic law (sharia) has developed a tradition of rulings that touch on virtually all aspects of life and society. This tradition encompasses everything from practical matters like dietary laws and banking to warfare and welfare.

Almost all Muslims belong to one of two major denominations, the Sunni (85%) and Shi'a (15%). The schism developed in the late 7th century following disagreements over the religious and political leadership of the Muslim community. Islam is the predominant religion throughout the Middle East, as well as in major parts of Africa and Asia. Large communities are also found in China, the Balkan Peninsula in Eastern Europe and Russia. About 20% of Muslims live in Arab countries, 30% in the Indian subcontinent and 15.6% in Indonesia, the largest Muslim country by population.

The reason why Islam stands accused of 9/11 is strictly because the people that commited the crime were devout Islamic fundamentalists.

Islam means submission is Arabic, and it is the duty to all Muslims to spread islam by any means, which the Quran very specifically even says through terror and ambush and every "strategem of war". Quran 9:05 and 9:29

Islamic moderates like Murad paint a pretty picture of Islam, but its not reality.

Really? More Christian terrorists? Please list all of the Christian terrorist attacks of the last 10 years.

Once you have that, we'll compare notes.

I agree that most religions can be twisted to justify crimes against society, but you'd be hard pressed to find an Amish or a Jain terrorist. The fundamentals of Islam are violent. Islam is by far worst example of bad religion that teaches violence, hate, arrogance, and vengeance.

LOL that's not true! Now you're just being ignorant and argumentative :) I encourage you to look deeper to discover what the real root is for you on this issue. As for saying that the same cannot be said about 'xtains'...well... there are many who have said the same is true for Christians. They are just as wrong as you are. If you're looking for a good debate, you need to educate yourself first. Education is the difference between debate and senseless arguing. You've got some work to do :)

Islam is the most evil religion on earth. The others can be bad, too. But Islam is the worst.

Its teachings and laws are malign in comparison to the other religions. Its fundamentals are the problem, not just the extremists.

murad aldin could be a filmmaker but not necessarily the right person to answer islam 101 type no-brainer questions on islam. i mean if 300 mil people of the world (approx population of US) doesn't know difference between salam or salami or muslim and islam or wrongly believes that the world gravitates around them and what they attribute to things, then its a waste of time to watch a video that dumbs down islam to a level that my even my dog doesn't want looking at it anymore.

So, what we have here is one part political correctness and one part either ignorance or self-delusion. 1st, "Islam" means "submission" and not "peace" (It is said to mean "peace" by those who are going to argue that Islam's a religion of peace.). Another point is, whereas people of all religions commit acts of violence it's by far Muslims who do it in their religion's name. What's more, when this happens, most all those other Muslims just sit on their hands instead of taking to the streets.
