Spring is here, and breeding season is in full swing. Birds are getting loud and abnoxious and moody - and they get brought to the Second Chance Rescue.

Sydney is an umbrella cockatoo, his mommy died and daddy doesn't have the time to take care of him and give him the attention he needs. So Sydney has been quietly plucking away at himself.

Peaches is a moluccan cockatoo, she has been plucking and mutilating herself for some time now, we aren't sure if it's because of neglect or because of underlying medical problems. She will need to be seen by a vet to get full work done on 3/29. A kind anonymous person donated $1000 to cover her vet bill, thank you very much Mr. Anonymous!!!

Kira is an umbrella cockatoo who lived with daddy for 14 years and then daddy went and got himself a wife. Kira expressed his displeasure by lunging at her every chance he got. So here he is. And yes, Kira likes his tail pulled.

Update: Kira has been adopted!

  • I think you all are wonderful for taking such good care of these poor creatures. But an FYI the tail game can be a HUGE problem. When you stroke & wiggle the base of the tail like that it can and ususally is sexually stimulating for the bird. This is truly unkind and can cause overbonding and my be a big part of the reason he hated the new wife. I have first hand (finger too) experience with this & have read a lot too. I have many years of bird exp so I'm not just spouting off but want 2 help OK

  • Peaches hole was caused by self-mutilation. Something in his past caused him to stress out. Cockatoos do not make good pets if you cannot give them the time and energy they need to be happy. If you are considering getting a cockatoo, do your research. Talk to other owners, NOT breeders or sellers, they will not tell you the problems. Look into rescues. A cockatoo is like having a 2 y.o. with a chainsaw.

  • Can the bird really survive with an opening in the chest?!!

  • Aww the one looks alot like my best friend's bird that he rescued, her name is Hatchet she had almost no feathers when he got her. She has grown alot of her feathers back and is the sweetest bird ever I love her and she gives me hugs all the time!

  • Peaches just breaks my heart. If I had the room I'd adopt her in a heartbeat! But for me one Too is enough. I have a 10 year old U2, a 28 yr old YNA, a a 20 yr old Cockateil, a 5 yr old TAG, and an 8 yr old Senegal.

I sure hope she recovers fully and lives a long and happy life. She will be in my thoughts always. Sending hugs and cuddles her way. <3 <3

  • beautiful birds :) i know why some people want to have them as pets, but i dont think birds should really be kept as pets anyway, they belong in the skies :) im not ready yet but when i have a place of my own i would love to adopt a rescued bird or two :)

Im glad there are people like you who care enough about these beautiful birds to do something to improve their situation :) good luck to you, and to your birds for all finding loving 'forever' homes :)

  • @shebear777 if your lovebird killed a budgie its YOUR FAULT, do resaerch first you idiot, ive never had a lovebird and i would know not to put them together!!!!

  • my cockatoo is starting to self - mutilate as well :( and she's in a sweater now to keep her from wounding herself. i change her sweater every week, and as soon as i get it off, i cant take my eyes off her and she starts to pluck out all new feathers growing in her chest area.. and she picks at the scabs as well.. but now she's barbering her feathers around her sweater.. i dont know what to do and i've tried almost everything! :'(

  • i actually dont understand people who catch and prison those beautifull birds letting them slowly die. They also think the birds somehow understand them as a "human friends"

  • Its a shame that these beautiful birds do this to themselves because of neglect or other factors. I, myself would love to own one of these, but I'll hold off. I'd hate to give one away because of a life changing situation.

  • You might wish to hang some cloth, tapestries, etc. in this room... it will cut down on the harsh, shrill, high frequency sound echoes from bird cries, and make the birds (and your) life a lot less stressful overall, not to mention reduce your heating and cooling costs.

Also, when you pet a 'too, consider stroking its feathers the *wrong* way, unlike petting a dog. Petting them the right way makes them edgy, as it can resemble flight.

** Thank you!! ** to all who run rescues. Keep it up!

  • loomks like its got beek and fether disease
