  • Apparently Newcastle Poly nearly became "City University Newcastle upon Tyne" - the acronym was only realised when they were putting the new signs up

  • An excellent little sequence of footage - including the legendary Francis Wilson, and an old Look North opt out. And Nicholas Witchell in the days when he did serious news, not being the Royal corespondent!

  • Alan Amos - one of the few Tory MPs in the north-east even when they had a 100-seat majority. Talking of which, I agree with Blyth Valley Borough Council; surveys like that were/are basically "if a place isn't impeccably middle-class, it's rubbish", and assume that everyone wants the same thing from a town which as we all know is far from the case ...

Newcastle Polytechnic eventually evolved into Northumbria University.
