Atka the wolf visits Binghamton University

Binghamton University recently welcomed the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) of South Salem, N.Y., and its 6-year old Arctic gray wolf into one of the Lecture Halls. Raised in captivity, Atka has become the ambassador wolf of the WCC. Besides an up-close encounter with Atka, attendees learned about the history of wolves in the United States, their importance to the ecosystem, as well as the efforts to save future generations of wolves.Founded in 1999, the WCC promotes wolf conservation by teaching about wolves, their relationship to the environment and the human role in protecting their future. The WCC accomplishes this mission through on- and off-site education programs that emphasize wolf biology, the ecological benefits of wolves and other large predators, and the current status of wolf recovery in the United States. The WCC also participates in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) and Recovery Plan for the critically endangered Mexican gray wolf and the red wolf.
