The Baronet Theater opened in 1913 as the Ocean Theater. It was renovated in 1953 by the Walter Reade Circuit and was considered an Art Deco style treasure. Sadly, the Baronet Theater was closed in the Summer of 2007. The auditorium roof caved in in the winter of 2009 and the building was demolished in September 2010. Walter Burns and Maurice Roberson had purchased the run-down theater in the 1980's and operated it intermittently but eventually sold it to Asbury Park developer Patrick Fasano for $5745,000 in December 2005.
Sixteen months later, in April 2007, Fasano sold it to Asbury Partners at a $50,000 loss for $425,000, according to property records. The real estate boom had crested. For a while, the theater showed some movies, had theatrical events and performers, but eventually shut down for good.
Currently the only operating theater in Asbury Park is the ShowRoom art house theater on Cookman Avenue.
There is so much more to to this story! This was WRONG WRONG FOR THIS CITY TO CARELESSLY Tear down this landmark. Shame on this city for not truly embracing this city for the historical treasure that it is.... I drove by while it was happening, and the night before when they were projecting a movie on the side of the building at night. There was no fair warning for anyone in this city to protect this building. A sin...
