  • thanks for your comment, im not going into a debate which steelworks had the best steel, that attitude is so kinder school and your probably right it might of been for the USA but when you have an industry that delivered steel to the world including the USA and pensylvania that is something as a welsh man im proud of considering the original workers of pennsylvania were mostly originated from wales and england to provide a excellent service to that part of the world.

  • maggie thatcher ruined my town, shildon by putting 2500 people on the dole by shutting the wagon works

  • No I've not forgotten about others. I said: "most of the inventions and developments". I did'nt say "all of the inventions and developments".

Sheffield is still one of the major steel producing parts of the world. Most of the Worlds' planes, power stations, oil/gas rigs contain Sheffield steel somewhere. Even Thatcher couldn't kill it off. Most of the steel that shut in the 70s and 80s was low end cutlery, screws. nails etc. The high tech stuff is still here.

I stand by what I said.

  • I suppose you have forgotten about Gilchrist Thomas, the inventor of the Bessemer process-----Discovered in Blaenavon, Wales

  • Hi alan, not sure if i know you. I have moved to the USA feel free to ask me anything you want. well within reason anyway.

  • if you are in the land of the living rob please get in touch with me alan

  • The best steel in the World comes from Sheffield, because most of the inventions and developments in steelmaking over the past 200 years are from here.

These were key to providing us with the cheap goods we have now. It was the 1st place to develop steels strong enough to build the long span bridges, and tall buildings that we see today. It developed stainless steel, so that surgucal instruments didn't rust, and manganese steel so that railways didn't wear out after just a few years.

  • Well said Rob, we have a borough in Walsall west mid's called Darlaston that was devastated in the same way by Maggie and her henchmen, you shouldn't dwell in the past i know, but it's hard to ignore heritage when communities were affected in such a way. I my self worked in a steel casting foundry and have worked in the metals industry all my life and bit by bit it is even today, suffering decline.
