"TRYING TO GET GOOD - The Jazz Odyssey of Jack Sheldon" is a documentary depicting the life and times of jazz great, Jack Sheldon. Leonard Maltin of Entertainment Tonight calls this film "compelling and highly entertaining". Many know Jack Sheldon as the indelible voice on SCHOOL HOUSE ROCK, or as Merv Griffin's trumpet-wielding side-kick on the Merv Griffin Show. Jazz fans know him to be a master trumpet player in the same league as Chet Baker, a ribald comedian and provacative singer. Visit www.TryingToGetGood.com for more info.

1940's on Gilmore street Jacksonville, Fl A phantom trumpet player played endlessly. It was like Harry James or Glenn Miller lived there. On Griffin show I found out he was my age and we went to the same hi school at the same time. I never knew him. But OH the sounds from that house linger on to this day
early 1940's Gilmore street, Jacksonville, Fl. Phantom Trumpet played endlessly. It was if Harry James or Miller lived in that house. Found out we went to same Hi school at the same time. I never knew him but oh that Trumpet.....
Jack recorded the solo trumpet track on the soundtrack for "The Sandpiper" written my Johnny Mandel, a masterpiece and so difficult to play. Such control and expression, so much beauty. "The Shadow of Your Smile" in countless variations. One of my all time favorite movie scores. I sat in with Jack at the Trident in Sausalito in the 60's. What a treat, what a truly nice guy and gifted musician.
What an awesome voice! I will always have his voice in my mind when I think back to seeing cartoons as a kid. Conjunction Junction what's your function...
I don't think that even Jack has a clue re: the magnitude of his creative gift. The Curtis Counce sessions, his duets with Peggy Lee, on and on--he's an American master, yet on some youtube videos featuring him the audience chatter is louder than his playing (Oscar, Shearing, any number of musicians would have walked). If people don't take his artistry more seriously, Jack should. By letting the public characterize him as a versatile funny man, he's contributing to our sad, moribund culture.
