After searching for commercial quality platforms and risers to support me and my tripod on-location video shoots, I built my own. Here's how. The criteria were aimed at low-cost, portability, and effectiveness. All the parts are readily available at the hardware store.

  • JIm thanks for your well made video. I took your directions and came up with my own platform. I used 3/4" (nomina) plywood sold at Lowe's in a 4X4 square. Had them cut it to 41" 2" at a time so I then had 3 extra strips to use as toe kicks. Just in case i was to busy to realize I was about to take a 2' fall. Found some roll indoor/outdoor carpet in black for .20 cents a square foot. The span between the plat forms is about 17" and because I used 3/4" ply hardly any reflection. Thanks!

  • Thanks!

  • Great video, Jim. Thanks for the post... I was just about to build something of my own, too! Your use of pre-made risers is a WHOLE lot easier than just about any other homemade solution. At $125 each, I think that you have a winner. Do you have any updates now that you've been using this for a while?
