Johannes Vermeer died too young...sad..

I think it's funny how some of the comments relate to the wife's attractiveness being the reason he wouldn't paint her. Honestly they were both just as attractive IMO but art is so subject and I think if I were an artist (which I'm not so don't take this to heart) it'd be more about the feeling and what I see in my work rather than how aesthetically pleasing it is.

@QOP13 I think as an offering of thanks and almost as 'severance' for a poverty-stricken, now unemployed maid.
-
@melsibrith I think he just meant them as a farewell gift to Griet. Also, there was no welfare at the time. The loss of a job was devastating to her family. They've been sinking into poverty ever since her tile painter father loss his sight, and his right hand was maimed. Recall Griet's desperate plea to her Master the first time she almost lost her job due to being blamed for Cornelia's theft.

@jasprincess98 i dont think the wife was upset about the pearls, she wanted the pearls to be the reason for her anger, but she was just mad at johannes attention for griet, basically jelousy. this is all in the book, recommend u read it ^^

@HickeryHickery Well put.

If I were Cornelia's daddy I'd beat her black and blue for being such a tattle tale.

I watched this today in art class and my favorite part in all this was when she had to take her bonnet off and the master saw her hair. I screamed out ,"Oh no you took my hair virginity!" Just cause the look on her face. Hahaha :D ! Oh and sitting behind my teacher I said , "Why doesn't she & the master just get together already?" and she said "You have to think about this logically!" and I said , "But...the butchers son is uglyy! Id give myself away to that hunk of a master anyday and runaway

The stupid wife will never be on the same level as Griet for Johannes.

@melsibrith I feel like it also has to do with the fact that her husband seems to take interest in Griet. She has a guess that something is going on even if there are no actions taken. She sees how he stares at her and he in the end paints Griet but never paints his wife. It hurst her
Vemeer and the wife just don't get each other. The look he gives her at 2:30 tells me "Yes, she did wear your pearls, but if you understood art, you'd know it had to be done and this wouldn't be an issue. But you don't. And I resent that about you." whilst she can only think, "How dare you let this OTHER woman wear my pearls? Tread so intimately into your heart and passions? What's she got that I haven't? Why aren't I the special one?"
Stupendous acting on both sides. Great underrated film, imo.

The mother is such a great character. The only woman in the house who sympathises with Griet's helplessness and subservience.
