Derek Blevins, defending Missouri state champion in the triple jump, long jump, and 4x100m, takes his last jump as a high school competitor at the state competition in Jefferson City, Missouri. Hampered by a hamstring injury that everyone thought had ended his season back in early April, he managed to limp through district and sectional qualifiers and make it back to state for the 4th straight year. While talking with his coach the evening before his final competition, he assessed his status as "about 75%". As you can see from his video, he is using a short approach instead of his normal long approach and is running at about 50% of normal speed due to the hamstring injury. He managed to jump 47' 4", bad leg and all, to place third in his last high school meet. While frustrated at having to settle for distances far below where he expected to be at this point, he said he was glad to be able to place and go out as an "all-stater" for the 4th straight year. Now he'll rest his leg for a few weeks to get it back to 100% and start getting ready for competing at The Ohio State University in the fall.
Way to go, Derek! Amazing!
