Cyrano is a very difficult role because it relies equally on a bravura style and emotional depth. I've seen a number of performances, and actors will generally do one or the other but very rarely both. Even though I am French, I still feel that this is the best Cyrano I've ever seen in terms of achieving both sides of the character, not to mention Ferrer's magnificent voice. Bravo!

An outstanding example of Romanticism and a truly inspiring monologue. Some people draw strength from holy books, from mysticism, from the dismal philosophies of collectivism. The words of Rostand, brought to life brilliantly by Ferrer, provide fuel for the soul of the individualist.

I love cyrano, especially Ferrer's version. As a writer/poet myself the speech at the bakery really moves me. BUT...and I know this is heresy to some....I really like Shatners version of the same solilooquy. It's the only decent thing on that whole album of crap.

What a delight to hear Brian Hooker's masterly translation again, now that the theatrical world is lumbered with Anthony Burgess's inferior rendering. I have the good fortune to own the Ralph Richardson recording of Hooker's Cyrano as well. Just compare, for instance, this "no thank you" speech from Hooker with the Burgess version. No comparison at all.

@diddymuck So you think her being 'deliberate' to put it nicely was intentional? If so, it was excellently done, and as you say, portrays the 'overvalued prize' quite effectively. I'm not sure though. haha.
